This paper will examine misperceptions of the Arctic and Antarctic landscapes as cognitive constructs. These misperceptions will be analysed as constructs of two different cultures: European and Aboriginal. It will be argued that the Arctic and Antarctic landscapes have, over the centuries, functioned as a geographical equivalent of a psychological Rorschach test; vast white landscapes upon which we (or rather, white male explorers) have imposed readings that reveal more about ourselves than about the geographic realities of the spaces. In contrast to this, the views of peoples indigenous to the Arctic may be seen as a more valid perception of this forbidding environment. 7 pgs. 13 f/c. 5b.

4. 3700 The Demographic Transition Model: An Assessment.

The demographic transition model represents an attempt to develop a coherent synthesis of world population history over the course of recent centuries. As this paper will demonstrate, this conceptual model suffers from the drawback of all generalizations in that it fails to explain a variety of local or individual demographic divergences from the expected norm. However, while this failing is acceptable in that it is common to all generalizations and thus may be compensated for, a discussion of its relevance to the understanding modern population will demonstrate that there are so many exceptions to its conceptual rule that it becomes useless as an analytical tool in any respect. 6 pgs. 5. 3876 From Spiritualism to Commercialism: The Historical Geography of the New England Village.

This paper will examine the historical geography of the New England village from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries. It will be argued that within this time frame the urban geography of the village underwent a series of complex changes that parallel both the population growth of New England and the declining power of the Puritan community within that same population. As will be seen, there exists a clear correlation between the transformation of these communities from spiritual to secular orientation, and their expansion as commercial and industrial centres. 9 pgs.
